WRIGHTS GW MERLOT 2003
This style of wine is fruit-driven, concentrating on the natural flavours in the grape. The GW range of wines has not been produced with animal by-products or dairy products, making it suitable for vegans and vegetarians to enjoy. The wine is the first in New Zealand to be fully certified vegetarian through the New Zealand Vegetarian Society.
The grapes come from Reid & Leigh Fletcher's vineyard in Patutahi, Gisborne. Reid and Leigh have been in the wine industry for many years. They produce quality grapes. I was fortunate to obtain two ton of Merlot from their vineyard. The grapes were harvested late in March 2003.
The wine has an extended masceration period helping to soften the tannins and add depth to the colour of the wine. From here it was aged for a year in 3 year old French oak barrels. The wine has a lifted fruit aroma at first, with vanilla and hazelnut flavours.
The wine was released in May 2003, and is proving very popular.
