Yvonne Lorkin - Hawkes Bay Today, 15th May 2012

Yvonne Lorkin reviewed our 2012 Verjuice - Here is the link to Hawkes Bay Today Story - http://www.hawkesbaytoday.co.nz/news/wine-juice-but-not-as-you-know-it/1375654/

This was a great story. Our verjuice is so tasty and versatile every store should be stocking this as a non alcoholic alternatve. This is a snap shot of what Yvonne had to say - "Wrights Verjuice 2012 - it was superb, and I've been using it regularly as a dressing with Dijon mustard, salt and pepper, which I mix through sauteed cannellini beans, softened leeks and bacon"

Wrights Entity Methode Traditionnelle 2010

Wrights Entity Methode 2010

The only New Zealand made, organic certified Methode on the market. This is a fantastic drop – a balanced, elegant wine with a crisp palate, fine bead and creamy textured finish. Lifted citrus and floral aromatic notes.

We have a stunning new artwork on our new label. Local artist Michael Burt has produced an abstract work of our Terrace Vineyard. Celebrating the bio-diversity of our vineyards and helping to create balance and a harmonious existence of life.

Our Methodes are made the traditionally way, as done with traditional French Champagne. Bottle aged for 1 year, hand riddled and manually disgorged. With every new Vintage of our Entity, we showcase a local artists artwork, we have been making this wine since 2001.

Review of our Entity Methode Traditionnelle 2010 by Yvonne Lorkin -

“Made entirely from chardonnay, this is an organically produced Blanc de Blanc from Gisborne’s Ormond Valley, and if you’re expecting something frilly and feminine – forget it.  This fizz reflects the ‘chaos factor’ of family life for Geoff and Nicola Wright as they work hard to maintain their organic vineyards, their busy winery and three energetic young sons.  The wine has complex yeasty, nutty, biscuit-based aromas followed by crisp acidity and a smoky, mineral note on the finish.  It is also New Zealand’s only certified organic méthode on the market and it’s brilliant with grilled calamari sprinkled with lemon juice and fresh herbs.”

Wrights Chardonnay 2011

Wrights Reserve Gewurztraminer 2011

Wrights Reserve Gewurztraminer 2011

Wrights Reserve Gewurztraminer is a unique varietal expression of the best Gisborne has to offer for the 2011 vintage. An off dry style with rich flavours of marmalade, toffee and ginger.

Harvested in two picks. The second pick was hung out on the vines and harvested late, producing intense flavoured botrytised fruit. Barrel aged for 6 months and then blended together.

This wine has always been my intention to make. However it has taken 10 years since the inception of the idea for the right season to come along and help produce this magnificent wine. This wine is a great one to cellar for 5 - 10 years or enjoy now with its layers of flavours and depth of complexity.

Review by Michael Cooper, 4 Starts out of 5.

"Grown in the Ormond Valley, the organic-certified 2011 vintage (4*) was made with some late-harvested, botrytis-affected fruit and was partly barrel-aged.   Yellow-hued, it is richly fragrant, with strong, gingery, spicy flavours in an intensely varietal style, woven with fresh acidity, and loads of personality."

Review John Bartlett, Director and Owner of New Zealand Wine Directory, 9th November 2011.

“Tonight Glenys and I opened the bottle of Wrights 2011 Reserve Gewurztraminer and what a stunner it is! Wrights are certified organic so grow their grapes & handcraft their wines using ethical and environmentally friendly, biodynamic techniques. The 2011 Gewurtraminer was made in two batches with the second left on the vines and picked later producing some botrytised fruit. This was barrel-aged for 6 months then blended together to result in this amazing Gertz!

On pouring it showed bright & deep gold in colour, and on the nose “Intoxicating & heady” said Glenys. There is rose petal, Turkish delight & a hint of burnt toffee leading into intense marmalade and stone fruit, ginger and more toffee on the palate with great length & moreish finish.

This really is a complex and textured wine which is drinking beautifully even at such an early age but with a little more time I’d expect that it can only get better. Although we tasted (i.e. drank) this without food it has such depth and concentration that it would be a perfect match for Thai or other similar spicy foods.”

 Wrights Reserve Chardonnay 2011

Wrights Reserve Chardonnay is a bold wine of distinction. Deep straw in colour. Exuding rich aromas of butterscotch and caramel. A full bodied, buttery style with strong hazelnut characters. Reviewed 15th November 2010

John Woodroffe Wine Columnist from the Wairoa Star, recently reviewed our Wrights Viognier 2010, this is what he had to say:

"In a recent national magazine most top Viognier came from the Gisborne region. The Wright's Wine Viognier will add to the regions reputation for excellence in Viognier. Sometimes a varietal lacking in character this is distinctive and delicious style. Pear, even citrus notes on the palate, the ginger tastes blended well for me with spicy food. I had it with a satay and it will match a range of spicy Indian or Asian dishes. Next day it was a relaxing drink before dinner after a hard day in the garden. If you are not familiar with the grape an excellent introduction to a versatile wine that will appeal to a wide range of palates."

This is the review of our Wrights Rose 2010 by Rebecca Taylor, Wineseeker, Wellington, October 2010

"I've been on the lookout for interesting Roses for summer, and this certainly qualifies! Made from Merlot and Syrah, there's good depth of colour and weight. Oak maturation makes itself apparent with aromas of chocolate, coconut and cedary spice sitting above the cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is dry and spicy, making this a Rose that will take you all the way through the barbecue, even once the sun goes down!"

2009 VINTAGE

Wrights Gewurztraminer 2009

Wrights Gewurztraminer 2009

The last time we released a Gewurztraminer was in 2005. Over the years Wrights have gained the reputation of making really interesting Gewurztraminers, this wine is no exception.

The grapes for this wine were harvested from two vineyards our Terrace Vineyard, which is fully certified organic and our Valley Vineyard which is under conversion. The grapes were all hand picked and only the ripest grapes were picked.

The style of this wine is intense, with up front turkish delight, soft rose petal flavours and complex marmalade flavours flowing through the palate. This wine is a dry style, with minimal residual sugar. Try this wine and let us know what you think.

Wrights Chardonnay 2009

Wrights Chardonnay 2009

Gisborne is the Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand. This wine reflects why this is. The grapes were originally planned for an unoaked style. However they were picked at 24 brix in perfect condition. Due to the fact the wine was going to be a big style we decided to balance this out with aging it in barrels for six months.

The Wrights Chardonnay is a full bodied, dry style. Lingering on the palate, with pineapple, hazelnut and butterscotch flavours. Appealing to lovers of both full oak and fruit driven styles. This beautifully balanced wine has undergone partial malolactic fermentation and been aged in oak barrels for 6 months.

The grapes were harvested from our new Valley Vineyard, on Ormond Valley Road. We expect this wine to cellar really well. Its sometimes hard to achieve this when we the wine is tasting good already. But in my opinion with the nice acidity and ripeness of the grapes, this wine will be even a more of a stunner in years to come.

Wrights Merlot Syrah 2009

Wrights Merlot Syrah 2009

Alot of our customers have been asking us to make a red again. This wine is a unique style and very complex. While relaxing with the wine, it has alot of different flavour components, which helps with the conversation.

Wrights Merlot Syrah is a beaujolais style. Flavours of wild berries, cinnamon and toffee, complemented by smoky cedar notes and a sprinkle of pepper. Extended skin contact, while undergoing carbonic maceration, has added depth and weight on the palate. Aged in new Grand Cru barrels for 6 months.

Wrights Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Wrights Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Over the years we have been making Sauvignon Blanc, and it is great to finally release a wine directly from our own vineyard. This wine is not a Marlborough style, it is quite different, very complex. We hand harvested our grapes, harvesting all the grapes at once. The ripeness of the bunches varied, allowing us to get nice ripe flavours in the juice at the same time some of the greener flavours, of black currant as well.

During the vintage we also left our semillon out to make a late harvest wine. Unfortunately the bees got into these berries and ate most of them. We were lucky to harvest some and made a sticky out of this amount. Due to the fact that this amount was not a commercial size wine, we have blended this back into the Sauvignon Blanc. Adding even more complex to this wine.

This style is new to the Sauvignon style. Quite complex, alot of different flavour components, with some residual sugar. If you are wanting to show case a new style of Sauvignon Blanc then this is the wine to try.

In 2009 we purchased the champayne making equipment to beable to completely finish the wines ourselves on site. Which we are very exciting with being able to do.

2007 VINTAGE

GW Chardonnay 2007

Wrights GW Chardonnay 2007

The 2007 vintage is being heralded as one of the best since the 1980's for the Gisborne region. We were waiting for our vineyard to come online for the 2008 vintage, but could not resist making a wine from such a great season. This wine definitely reflects the season. The grapes were harvested from Reid & Leigh Fletchers vineyard in Patutahi. The grapes came in super clean with no rot or botrytis, they were ripe and tasting lovely.

From the winemaking perspective, we destemmed and pressed the grapes and cool fermented the juice. The wine was then kept on yeast lees and stirred regularly for complexity. We had the option to undergo malolactic fermentation, but decided against it to help retain the aromatics and freshness of the wine. This wine is hugely aromatic and with fresh acidity that with each mouthful your mouth salivates with mouth watering flavours. No sugar was added back to this wine, so it is bone dry, which is complemented with ripe pear, apple, lime and citrus flavours.

This wine will age lovely and over the years will soften and mellow, retaining its aromatic notes. This wine is sold out. You may still find this wine at some of our existing Outlets, to view our current wines available which can be purchased direct from us check out our Online Orders.
