We have finally got around to making another Late Harvest Semillon from our certified organic vineyard in Ormond Valley – Terrace Vineyard. This vineyard we established in 2007. We are very excited with this wine, if you like dessert wines of Alsace style, you will love this wine. It is also great value for money, we make this wine out of pure passion and are excited to share it with you.
The grapes were harvested at 36 brix, with a portion of the grapes having botrytis on the bunches. Over the years we have tried hard to make a Late Harvest Semillon, but unfortunately the bees always seem to beat us to it. This year we managed to get in there before them. For the 2015 Semillon, three separate picks were done in this block to ensure only the ripess grapes were harvested.
This wine as you can expect has lovely ripe flavours of melons, nectarine and apricots. The alcohol is 8.5%, and would not budge anymore from this point, with the residual sugar per litre at 220 grams. The wine has a lovely rich golden hue colour. The vines were taken as cuttings from Roly and Sue Fields vineyard in Manutuke, we planted them out in a nursery at Anna and Colin Alders orchard in Manutuke, whom also grow organically. We then purchased our Terrace Vineyard block in Ormond Valley in 2005 and transplanted our vines that year. The Semillon vines are grown on their own root stock are are very vigorous vines.
This wine has great cellaring potential and I recommend to grab two for your cellar, one to enjoy now and then one to open up when you are wanting to well your guests.
All our grapes and wines we produce are certified organic through AsureQuality NZ. Our cellar door is mainly open during the summer months in Gisborne from December – March, outside these hours we welcome appointments. We produce our own wines and own and operate our own winery in Manutuke, 1093 Wharerata Road, Gisborne, 15 minutes drive from the Gisborne city.
