• Wrights Fume Blanc 2014

Wrights Fume Blanc 2014, is not your traditional Sauvignon Blanc. Fermented on skins and maturated for another two weeks on skins. Then barrel aged for 10 months, with a portion going through malolactic fermentation.

This wine has an enticing smokie aroma, with intense depth of colour and complex full flavours on the palette. It is nothing like a Sauvignon Blanc – more like an Órange Wine style, with oxidative winemaking techniques to soften tannins.

To date this is New Zealand’s only 5 star rated órange wine’, reviewed by Raymond Chan.

Grown in Gisborne, at our Terrace Vineyard, Ormond Valley appellation. Cuttings were taken from one of the original Sauvignon Blanc clones brought to Gisborne in the 1980’s. These vines are not grafted but planted on their own roots.

Full, even, light orange colour with some depth, lighter on rim. The nose is fulsome and bold with well layered and interwoven aromas of ripe tropical fruits, savoury yellow stonefruit, spicy citrus elements, nutty oak and smoke. The complexity of character is the feature.

Dry to taste and full-bodied, the palate has layers of complex and funky flavours. Crystallised tropical and citrus fruits, nuts, spices and smoke open across the mouth. The oaking contributes to the interest. The wine is rich in fruit sweetness, and framed by balanced mouthfilling textures and structure. The wine flows with positive drive and grip, underlined by fresh acidity lending tension and energy, carrying through to a very long, rich, spicy, exotic finish, with very fine grip. This is an exotic, complex skin-contact Sauvignon Blanc with rich fruit, balanced textures and a lively mouthfeel. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine and a variety of white meat dishes over the next 3-4 years.

80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon from the ‘Valley’ and ‘Terrace’ vineyards, Ormond, hand picked fruit including ungrafted Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in the 1980s. Indigenous yeast fermentation on skins to 13.5% alc., the wine spending a total of 30 days on skins, the wine aged 10 months in seasoned oak with partial MLF. Certified AsureQuality organic. 18.5/20 Jun 2015 RRP $28.00

I first discovered Wrights Vineyard at the Green Living Expo in Auckland in June 2015. I tried their Fume Blanc and well, it haunted me. It was a wine I would return to in my dreams! So I bought a case online. Now Raymond Chan’s review speaks with much more wine aficionado language than I can, but what I can tell you is that this wine is exquisite. This is a wine that is to savour and to make memories with. It is wonderful.

This wine shows you all the reasons why organic is the way to go – you can taste nature, the soil, the rain, the woody skeins of vines along wire. The colour is like autumn leaves. This wine is so good that I almost don’t want to write this review because you might buy lots of it and then I might not be able to… but that would be so, so selfish. Some secrets are made to be shared, and Wrights Fume Blanc is one of them. This is a handcrafted jewel of a wine. Shine on you crazy diamond, you beautiful secret waiting to be shared.
